Many companies have made sustainability a priority, and the challenge has been how to convey to the consumer what all of these recycled and recyclable labels really mean.  How2Recycle has done just that. How2Recycle is a project of the Green Blue Sustainable Packaging Coalition. According to How2Recycle.info:

The goals of the How2Recycle were developed through open discussion with numerous stakeholders, and relate to the ultimate vision of a system where valuable packaging materials are beneficially recovered. Our goals are to:

  1. Reduce confusion by creating a clear, well-understood, and nationally harmonized label that enables industry to convey to consumers how to recycle a package.
  2. Improve the reliability, completeness, and transparency of recyclability claims.
  3. Provide a labeling system that follows Federal Trade Commission Green Guides.
  4. Increase the availability and quality of recycled material.

This is the label and how it works:

Many leading companies already taking advantage of the How2Recycle Label include:  Ampac, Best Buy, Clorox, Costco Wholesale, Esteé Lauder Companies Aveda Brand, General Mills, Microsoft, Minute Maid, Sealed Air, Seventh Generation, and REI.
